Athenaeum, the “People’s College”

Known as the “People’s College,” the Athenaeum offered instruction in science, classics, foreign language and dart. The first floor housed a gymnasium and the remaining five floors contained a library, reading rooms and classrooms. The Art Institute of Chicago was headquartered here until it moved to its current location on Michigan Avenue following the close of the World’s Columbian Exposition.
