Hotel Everett

Marie and Léon Grandin stayed at this residential hotel located at 3619 Lake Park Avenue during their last months in Chicago during the spring of 1893. Madame Grandin took advantage of their stay to describe the lakefront setting, guests, meals, and daily activities at the hotel.
Quotation from A Parisienne in Chicago:
“We decided to stay at the Hotel Everett on Lake Avenue. The hotel resembled a barracks as it was made up of five square three-storey houses. In front of each house lay the typical patch of grass, surrounded by cemetery-like stones. Each house had a monumental staircase leading up to the door, and all were topped by a large ‘Everett Hotel” sign. The exterior appearance of the hotel was very acceptable and in keeping with the clientele. It was a well-maintained hotel for well-bred, middleclass clients but certainly not for millionaires. The rear of the hotel overlooked the lake and while the view was very charming, it was somewhat spoiled by the proximity of the railroad tracks and the frequent passage of trains alls day and all night long.” (104)
