A Parisienne in Chicago

Jackson Park

“Bird’s-Eye View of the World’s Columbian Exposition, Chicago, U.S.A. 1893” in Rand McNally and Company’s Pictorial Chicago and Illustrated World’s Columbian Exposition (Chicago, Rand McNally and Company 1893)

Jackson Park, which borders Lake Michigan, was the setting for the World’s Columbian Exposition which opened on May 1, 1893. After the exposition, the neo-classic style buildings were demolished except for the Liberal Arts Pavilion which today houses the Museum of Science and Industry.

Quotation from A Parisienne in Chicago:

“I am not afraid to say that this exposition in Chicago, which was so criticized, was marvelous and superior to all previous ones. With our meager resources, we could never equal its splendor.” (139)
