A Parisienne in Chicago

Chicago Public Library

Before finding a permanent home in 1897, the Chicago Public Library was located on the fourth floor of City Hall at the corner of Lasalle and Washington Street.

Quotation from A Parisienne in Chicago:

This terrible weather annoyed me, as I took a very painful spill and was not able to go to the library to consult certain documents that were very necessary for my research.

Libraries are very numerous in Chicago. The largest library is found in City Hall while the other libraries are smaller branches. It is not possible to compare the Chicago Library to our extremely rich Bibliothèque nationale however, the Chicago Library contains a considerable number of volumes and its reading rooms are very well designed. They are similar to ours in France but have separate reading rooms for men and women. Foreign literature, including French literature is well represented. (124)
