Washington Park
This park was located within walking distance of Madame Grandin’s lodgings on the south side of Chicago.
“Despite the cold temperature, it was a nice day so we decided to take a walk in Washington Park. A large crowd of passengers, most of whom had ice skates, filled the tram cars. At the park, almost everyone got off the tram and walked toward the lake. It was terribly cold, never had I been so cold, yet the temperature was expected to dip even lower. Later in January, we had a week when the centigrade thermometer hit twenty seven degrees below zero for eight days straight! The fur trim around my neck seemed to be covered with snow, as my breath immediately froze.
